Welcome from Jocelyn Toohill,
President,
Australian College of Midwives
Queensland Branch
I would like to invite midwives, consumers and other professionals involved in maternity care to attend this year’s Australian College of Midwives Queensland State Conference. The program is filled with interest and innovation of currently experienced and knowledgeable professionals and consumers making a difference to maternity care and who are working and living in the real world.
Such occasions provide a time for reflection of our own practice or service, becomes a catalyst for growing ideas and plans, and is a stimulus for challenge and change. Regardless of your area of interest or expertise, the program offers a smorgasbord of information on contemporary issues across a broad range of topics facing midwives in their professional lives on a daily basis. From diabetes to obesity, protecting and promoting normality through education, resources and innovative models of care, and celebrating in the uniqueness of each woman and her family, broadens our understanding and knowledge of how best to reform and provide best practice care.
I encourage you to attend, grow personal and professional networks, and leave enlightened and energized. The fundamental intention of the conference is for you to have fun, be surrounded by friends (old or new) and be enriched by the caliber of speakers and inherent goodwill of likeminded delegates.

Planning has progressed well with the Midwifery Expo. Interest has started to pick up now and the program has been circulated widely.
We welcome the chance to say hello to some old friends from past Expos and look forward to meeting some new faces in sunny Brisbane in November.
The program reflects a wide degree of midwifery interests. Delegates will be able to receive interesting updates on new practices, as well as a chance to refresh on some perennial topics, that are still relevant in today’s society.
The Expo is a great chance to share what the New Zealander’s are up to as well. The numbers of New Zealand midwives coming across the Tasman has steadily increased, since the first Expo in 2004. The program features a number of New Zealand midwives as presenters. This is a great opportunity for networking and learning as Australia continues to take up group midwifery practices with gusto!
Delegates to the Expo have in the past come from all around Australia and New Zealand, particularly from rural areas and this practice has been very heartening for us as conference organizers. Feed back from previous Expo’s have shown country midwives see the three days as a great opportunity to update and learn from a range of health professionals.
We have been working on the social program and will have information soon regarding the delegates dinner. So, please keep an eye out for updates in the coming months.
‘It will only take 5 minutes’!
How many times have you heard that phrase in your life? In our continued role of ‘expert of all things’, I bet you can recall numerous times in your careers when someone has said that to you.
We have decided that we will run a short story competition. Send us your stories, titled, it will only take 5 minutes, and we will read these out at the end of the lunch break each day. Prizes will be awarded each day for the best stories. The stories should be no longer than 500 words or 5 minutes! So, keep them short and to the point, and you could win one of our fabulous prizes! They can be funny, hilarious, downright sad and just about anything else! Send them to our email address at cnprojectpeople@hotmail.com; we may include them in the delegate’s handbook as well.
We would also like to say a big thank you to our Platinum sponsor, Medichill. Medichill’s is our printing sponsor and I am sure you will agree the programs look great! Thanks again Gary.
